Early development

With development pumping along for just over a week now the game seems to have gotten quite the face lift with a heavy dose of AI programming allowing many new mechanics to be implemented.  Here I’m going to write a little bit about each major step in the game version as to log our game from the humble beginnings to the majestic stallion it will be once complete.

Adding pathfinding to Flixel

Hey!

This is my first blog post, I’m Sparkky the programmer for Eh’ Plus Flash and I thought I’d just a quick once over on the implementation of Path-finding in our upcoming game.

Let me start by saying I love the Flixel framework. It has a really well put together blitting system, handles animations, collisions and sound very well.
Furthermore it’s been a great starting point for most of my personal flash game projects over the last couple years.

One feature recently added (as of this writing) was Flixel’s path finding, which was a little less than stellar…
Our game had a few requirements:

  1. Path finding would not lag the game
  2. Path finding could navigate the world and factor in certain NPC’s abilities to manipulate the world

Criteria Number 2

I’m going to discuss #2 today as understanding how the A* algorithm works is important to improving performance. Flixel’s native implementation lacks the ability to traverse walls due to its lack of a cost function. This had to change. Read more »

Fresh Start

With a new site and a new outlook on becoming an independent game studio the Eh’Plus team is beginning development on a fun and intuitive flash game.  Our previous games, both complete and partial, have been in genres we are not passionate about, but now we embark on the sandbox experiment that many indie studios have found success in.  Working long hours every day of the week seems like the least we could do to accomplish such a dream that we are passionate in.

Game development of handsomely named Project Czar has been underway for couple days and with the engine nearing completion, adding actual game mechanics are on the horizon.
